Phillies-Marlins Blown Call Costs Florida A Victory

The Phillies and Marlins played a wild game Thursday night, and the extra-innings battle was ultimately highlighted by a controversial call in bottom of the ninth inning.

With one out and Hanley Ramirez on second base, Gaby Sanchez lined one down the third base line. As the ball bounced directly over the bag, umpire Bob Davidson immediately called it foul, but wasn't even looking as the ball clearly landed in fair territory.

Florida manager Edwin Rodriguez ran out onto the field and argued with Davidson, but was unsuccessful. The call cost Florida what would have been the game-winning run, and they went on to lose in the 10th inning.

After the game, Davidson watched the replay and was not convinced that he made the wrong call. "I was right on top of it, and it was wide of the bag," he said. "What the ball did when it went past me is irrelevant. I understand that's the winning run, but in my opinion it was foul."

There have been plenty of blown calls this year, most notably Jim Joyce's horrible call at first base that cost Detroit pitcher Armandao Galarraga a perfect game.
